Susan Hernandez is the director of orchestras at Coronado HS. She has been a public school educator for 30 years both in the Ysleta and El Paso ISD's where she has planted and developed superior orchestra programs. Many outstanding music educators and professional musicians are her former students. Mrs Hernandez can also be seen playing assistant principal viola in the El Paso Symphony - she would love to see you at an EPSO concert! She holds memberships in ASTA (American String Teachers Association), TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association) and the AFM (American Federation of Musicians). She has completed Suzuki certification teacher training at TCU in both violin and viola.

Symphony Orchestra: Auditioned string players (1st period) who combine with the most advanced wind, brass and percussionists from the Coronado HS Band. Combined these students are the Coronado HS Symphony Orchestra. They perform in other selected festivals and the UIL Concert/Sightreading Festival.
String Orchestra: Non-auditioned upperclassmen (grades 10-12) who combine from periods 5, 6 and 7. This group performs as the "String Orchestra" at the halloween and winter concerts and combines with some members of the freshmen orchestra for the UIL Concert/Sightreading Festival in the spring.
Chamber Orchestra: Auditioned string players which come from the top ranking strings in the symphony orchestra class (1st period). These students perform as the Coronado HS Chamber Orchestra at the UIL Concert/Sight-reading Festival. They perform advanced repertoire written for chamber orchestra.
Freshmen Orchestra: This is the training ground for all of our other performing groups. The freshmen orchestra combines from periods 2 and 3 performs together at both the Halloween and Winter concerts. In the spring semester the most advanced freshmen are invited to perform in the string orchestra or symphony orchestra at UIL Concert/Sightreading Festival.
